How to know if a job ad is a scam

As more and more Filipinos go online for a job, we need to know how to protect ourselves.

With advertisements spamming social media pages as you gloss through your feed, it’s not so hard to look for a WFH job, right? Wrong. A lot of them are trickier than you think. Phishing and identity theft have grown prevalent through remote job scams that have scattered all over the internet, so think twice before clicking that suspicious link or sending your CV. Here are a few things to watch out for in a job listing.

  1. Do your research about the company. One Google search can give you a list of results about the company like its location address, LinkedIn profile, and website. If you are redirected to a new website with a different address bar, it’s a scam. Stick to what you see and what you don’t. 
  2. Check the salary. Is it lucrative for a small amount of work? Yes, because it attracts more people. Your new mantra when checking jobs should be, “If it’s too good to be true, it probably is.”
  3. Check if the job listing is copy-pasted off a legit website. Scammers don’t have time for an essay contest…
  4. Check for poor grammar, spellings, and punctuations. …and they certainly don’t have time to proofread. 
  5. The company uses a generic email and random numbers. This can be hard to distinguish because a lot of employers create emails with Google and Yahoo, but not if they use numbers, text speak, and silly acronyms on their email address, like [email protected] (don’t laugh, this belongs to a real scammer and he/she has scammed people). 
  6. They hire you immediately. Pretty quick, right? Of course, when you get hired, you will have to submit personal documents and give other information—that’s exactly what they need.
  7. Some fake companies ask you to pay for training upfront. This is a one-time big-time scam. Real employers never ask for training or equipment payment during the hiring process, unless it is a paid internship at your expense. 
  8. You are asked to provide personal information like bank account, SSS number, and home address in an instant. “Periodt.”
