Promoter Eddie Hearn explains why there are hurdles in potential Pacquiao-Garcia bout

Matchmaker Eddie Hearn said Mikey Garcia remains interested in facing Manny Pacquiao but admitted a possible fight may not happen until the unforeseeable future.

“Mikey Garcia is one of the fortunates ones that boxed this year so he’s not busting my phone up too much, but he wants to fight Manny Pacquiao,” the English promoter told DAZN TV recently.

Garcia holds a 40-1 record with 30 knockouts, his only defeat coming against Errol Spence for the IBF welterweight belt in March 2019.

He last fought Jesse Vargas in Frisco, Texas in late-February, winning via unanimous decision.

There were talks of a potential Pacquiao-Garcia clash since last year, with Hearn eyeing Saudi Arabia as a potential site.

But those plans were put to a halt due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“It’s very difficult to make those fights at the moment, unless you can attract a site fee from another country,” said Hearn.

Trainer Freddie Roach said several weeks ago that facing Garcia will be a “really, really good fight” for Pacquiao.

But much of the speculation is a potential Pacquiao bout opposite unbeaten Terence Crawford, with Top Rank CEO Bob Arum hinting that it could happen in Bahrain next year.

MP Promotions president Sean Gibbons has since laughed off Arum’s remarks.

Hearn, a top Matchroom sport executive, said Garcia has strong desire to face some of the biggest names in the welterweight division, including Pacquiao.

“Mikey Garcia basically just wants the monstrous fights, and he would be looking to make it happen by the end of the year,” said Hearn.

Pacquiao’s role as a senator, coupled with the country’s COVID-19 crisis, has made it impossible for him to make a ring return this year.
