On Grandparents' Day, give them the gift of poetry

Join the Manila Bulletin's ‘Tula Para Kay Lolo't Lola’ online contest and get a chance to win SM Store gift certificates and be featured in the Manila Bulletin.

Remember when our grandparents would cry out each verse off a poem while trying to put us to bed? On Grandparents’ Day, give back through the gift of poetry that they would treasure for the rest of their lives. 

Join our “Tula Para kay Lolo’t Lola” poetry writing contest and get featured in our social media pages and in the print issue of our Grandparents’ Day special, Sept. 13, 2020. You can also get a chance to win SM Store gift certificates.

Write it in Filipino or English, make it lines of home that dwell in your personal relationship, put all the words that describe your grandparents, make it ambiguous, use metaphors encompassing their love over the years, and say exactly what you want to say. Times are a-changing, but love and gratitude shown through the solemn art of beautifully written poems never go out of trend.

Here are the mechanics of the contest: 

Like and follow The Manila Bulletin's social media pages. 

  • Make sure to only upload your originally composed English or Filipino poem—a minimum of 80 words to a maximum of 120 words—on Facebook and Instagram. 
  • Make it extra personal by including a photo of yourself with your grandparent or grandparents.
  • In the post caption, include the hashtags: #MBGrandParentsDay2020 and #TulaParaKayLoloatLola and tag @manilabulletin.
  •  Make sure to set your post to public. Deadline of entries is until Sept. 6, 2020.
  • Stay tuned for updates. The winner will be announced in the Manila Bulletin's social media pages and will be notified through direct message.
  • There will be a total of 12 winners:
    • Five winners of P5,000 gift certificates for Top Entries
    • One winner of P5,000 gift certificate for the Most Shared Poem
    • One winner of P,5000 gift certificate for the Most Liked Poem
    • Five finalists of P1,000 gift certificates each
      **Winners of these categories will be selected on Sept. 7 at 10 a.m.
  • Qualified entries will be published in the Manila Bulletin’s social media pages and the top entries will be in the print issue on Sept. 13, 2020.
