Pole vaulter EJ Obiena settles for bronze in IAAF Diamond League Athletics

Olympic pole vaulter EJ Obiena displayed his best performance of the season so far by capturing the bronze medal in the star-studded IAAF World Diamond League Athletics in Monaco on Friday (Saturday in Manila).

Obiena cleared the height at 5.70 meters on his second attempt in the field of five that included world record holder Armand Duplantis of Sweden and Ben Broeders of Belgium.

Duplantis won the gold medal with 6.00m while Broeders settled for silver with 5.70m on his first attempt.

Duplantis, who shattered the world mark at 6.18m in an indoor tournament in Glasgow last February, attempted to clear 6.15m but failed.

Reigning Olympic champion Thiago Braz of Brazil failed to land the podium after settling for fifth with 5.50m.

American Sam Kendricks, the 2016 Rio Olympics bronze medalist, failed to compete after his poles did not arrive on time.

This is the second tournament for Obiena after finishing silver at theÂ 13^thÂ Triveneto Meet in Trieste, Italy two weeks back.
