Javicia Leslie is the new lead star of “Batwoman,” Warner Bros. Television revealed Thursday.
The American actress, who previously starred in “God Friended Me,” replaced Ruby Rose who left the show last May after one season.
"I am extremely proud to be the first Black actress to play the iconic role of Batwoman on television, and as a bisexual woman, I am honored to join this groundbreaking show which has been such a trailblazer for the LGBTQ+ community," Leslie said in a statement.
Leslie also confirmed the news on Instagram. “For all of the little black girls dreaming to be a superhero one day…it’s possible,” her post read.
Ruby congratulated Leslie for taking over the donning of the bat cape.
“I am so glad Batwoman will be played by an amazing Black woman. I can’t wait to watch season 2 you are going to be amazing,” Ruby wrote on her own Instagram account.
According to entertainment news Variety, Leslie will play a new character on the show named Ryan Wilder. She is described as “likable, messy, a little goofy, and untamed.”
“Batwoman” is set to air its second series in January.
