2020 William Jones Cup cancelled due to COVID-19 pandemic

After initially rescheduling it for next month, the William Jones Cup has been cancelled altogether this year as the coronavirus pandemic continues to spread.

The announcement came Thursday, July 2 after the Chinese Taipei Basketball Association arrived at a decision to call it off. The event was originally set this month but was pushed to August.

Liberty Times first reported the cancellation.

Mighty Sports, which represents the Philippines, captured the championship last year behind reinforcements Renaldo Balkman, McKenzie Moore and Eugene Phelps with an eight-game sweep of the tournament.

Taiwan has been able to return to normalcy little by little with the resumption of several sports events, including baseball games since there is low rate of COVID-19 infection.

However, according to reports, the CTBA said that it’s going to be inconvenient for foreign players upon their arrival arrived in Taiwan. The association consulted the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) and both decided that health is most important at this time.

This is the third cancellation of the Jones Cup since it began in 1977. In 1989, a fire destroyed the Chunghwa Sports Stadium forced organizers to cancel the event, and in 2003 because of the SARS outbreak.
