'Train to Busan' sequel 'Peninsula' surpasses 3 million tickets, No. 1 for 2 consecutive weeks

The Korean zombie film “Peninsula,” which stars Kang Dong-won and Lee Jung-hyun, has reached another milestone at the box office. 

On July 28, the sequel to the 2016 hit movie “Train to Busan” has sold 3 million tickets on its 14th day since opening on July 15 in South Korea.

According to the Korean Film Council (KOFIC), total admissions for “Peninsula” on July 28 tallied 69,930 to bring the total to 3,004,541 tickets. It earned $479,025 on the day for a total haul of $21.93 million in two weeks. 

To commemorate the milestone, stars Kang Dong-won, Lee Jung-hyun and Lee Re, and director Yeon Sang-ho gathered together and pose for a photo with a cake.  

“Peninsula” has been No. 1 at the daily Korean box office for 14 straight days since opening. It set the best opening-day record this year in South Korea by selling 353,010 tickets on July 15 despite cinema capacity restrictions due to the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. 

It sold more than 1 million tickets on its fourth day and reached the 2-million ticket mark on the seventh day. 

For the weekly box office from July 24 to 26, “Peninsula” emerged as the top-grosser again, selling 595,104 tickets and earning $4.48 million with a revenue share of 80.75 percent for the period. 

The movie also ranked No. 1 at the box office in  Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand, and Mongolia. “Peninsula” was sold to 185 countries and territories.
