Gyms, internet cafes to reopen in GCQ areas in August

More businesses located in areas under general community quarantine will be allowed to partially reopen starting Aug. 1.

Inter-Agency Task Force on Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF) spokesman Harry Roque on Wednesday said gyms, internet shops, and review centers could gradually reopen starting at 30 percent capacity.

Pet grooming shops, drive-in cinemas, personal grooming services, and aesthetic services in GCQ areas will also be allowed to reopen while strictly observing health protocols.

All these establishments must comply with health protocols to be drafted by the Department of Trade and Industry and Department of Health. These requirements are not yet available as of writing.

Moreover, according to Roque, live events will also be allowed in MGCQ areas. Museums, libraries, and cultural centers can also reopen. Meanwhile, cockfighting and the operation of cockpits, beerhouses, and similar establishments primarily serving alcoholic drinks are still not allowed to operate.

President Rodrigo Duterte is set to announce on Thursday new community quarantine classifications for Aug. 1 onward. But Malacanang earlier said the country could go back to MECQ if cases surge past 85,000 by the end of the month.
