Iloilo hospital partially shut down due to COVID-19 positives

ILOILO CITY—Another government-run hospital in this city had to be partially shut down after one of its health workers was infected with by one of its coronavirus disease (COVID-19) patients.

Services for the outpatient department (OPD) of West Visayas State University Medical Center (WVSUMC) in Iloilo City is temporarily unavailable after a health worker tested positive for COVID-19. (Tara Yap/Manila Bulletin)

“We apologize that our OPD will be temporarily put on hold,” said the West Visayas State University Medical Center (WVSUMC) in a statement released Friday, July 24.

“All personnel deemed at risk were swabbed, isolated and monitored. Areas and units affected were properly sanitized and disinfected,” it added.

While WVSUMC did not state the circumstances, the regional Department of Health (DOH-6) confirmed three patients and a health worker did test positive for COVID-19.

“The health worker has history of exposure to a previously confirmed COVID-19 case,” said Dr. Sophia Pulmones, DOH-6 chief for Local Health Support Division.

The 53-year-old female worker had contact with an 80-year-old man, who died from COVID-19 last July 7.

The man who died also infected a 71-year-old woman and her 39-year-old daughter.

Meanwhile, it was unclear when the hospital will reopen its OPD.

“We would like to ask for utmost understanding and support of everyone as WVSUMC continues its mandate to deliver quality health services to the people of Panay ,” it added.
