'Train to Busan' sequel 'Peninsula' sells 2 million tickets in one week

“Peninsula,” the sequel to the 2016 hit Korean zombie film “Train to Busan,” has reached 2 million in total admissions, maintaining its No. 1 spot at the box office in South Korea.

Data from the Korean Film Council (KOFIC) showed that “Peninsula” breached the 2 million mark on July 21, selling 2,063,078 tickets and earning $15.12 million (P745.5 million) since its opening on July 15.

“Peninsula” outpaced previous zombie film frontrunner “#Alive,” released on June 24 starring Park Shin-hye and Yoo Ah-in, when it sold 1.94 million tickets on July 20 against the latter’s 1.85 million tickets.

It topped the weekly Korean box office from July 17 to 19, selling 1.22 million tickets and grossing $9.27 million with a revenue share of 93.17 percent from 2,575 screens compared to second-placer “#Alive,” which had 23,459 tickets sold and revenue of $151,466 with a revenue share of 1.52 percent from 491 screens.

As of July 21, the five top-grossing films released in South Korea are “The Man Standing Next,” released on Jan. 22 (before the COVID-19 pandemic hit South Korea), 4.75 million tickets sold; “Hitman: Agent Jun,” released on Jan. 22, 2.4 million tickets; “Peninsula,” 2.06 million tickets; “Ashfall,” released on Dec. 19, 2019, 1.96 million tickets; and “#Alive,” 1.86 million tickets.

“Peninsula” earlier set the best opening-day record this year in South Korea by selling 353,010 tickets on July 15.

In comparison, “Train to Busan” sold 872,673 tickets on opening day in South Korea on July 20, 2016 and in seven days, its total admissions reached 6.23 million including pre-opening screenings.
