As the nation marks the 122nd anniversary of Philippine Independence on Friday, June 12, a Catholic prelate has called on Filipinos to defend their hard won freedom by opposing policies that threaten it.

"We celebrate Independence with hope that true independence will come upon us if now we defend our freedom," he said in an interview. "We fight the terror bill that threatens our hard won freedoms," added Pabillo. Several prelates and church groups earlier opposed the bill saying it violates the rights of the people and makes a mockery of the Constitution. With the terror bill, the COVID-19 pandemic and millions unemployed, San Carlos Bishop Gerardo Alminaza exhorted every Filipino to read well the "signs of the times" and make their voices heard in various platforms. "I invite all to seriously consider how best to express our love for country and honor the precious memory of those who offered their lives for our freedom," he said. Retired Sorsogon Bishop Arturo Bastes urged the faithful to fast and pray on June 12. The prelate said the people should pray for the dying democracy in the country due to Duterte's penchant for "dictatorship." "Under Duterte our democracy is dying! Our country should instead fast and pray to God on June 12 for deliverance from the pandemic, from poverty and from political terror and oppression!" said Bastes. "Church bells should ring to remind all Filipinos to pray for these intentions to make our country truly free!" he added.
