LTO extends validity of expired driver's licenses

By Alexandria Denise San Juan The Land Transportation Office (LTO) has extended the validity of driver’s licenses that expired during the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) for 60 days or at least two months after lifting of the restrictions. LTO Assistant Secretary Edgar Galvante said that the agency will begin accepting applications for renewal upon lifting of the ECQ when operations on government offices will resume. "Yung inabot ng quarantine na hindi nakapag-renew, ineextend naman yan. Bibigyan sila ng 60 days upon lifting ng quarantine. Ibig sabihin, kapag nagbukas na ulit yung opisina ng LTO para i-process yung registration and renewal ng lisensya, from that time within 60 days," he explained. (Those who have licenses that expired during the quarantine period, they will be given 60 days upon lifting of the lockdown to renew. This means within 60 days from the time the LTO office reopens to process the registration and renewal of the license.) Galvante also assured the public that no penalties will be collected for the late registration of motor vehicles and renewal of driver's licenses that expire within the duration of the ECQ. However, the LTO chief said that applicants should process their registration before the end of the grace period to avoid overcrowding at the offices on the day of the deadline. "Walang penalty yun, kaya lang ang pakiusap namin, huwag naman hintayin ang last day ng extension para hindi magkumpulan ang mga tao," Galvante added. (We will not impose penalties, but we are asking applicants not to wait for the last day of extension to avoid overcrowding.) According to Galvante, LTO will limit its transactions once the ECQ is lifted, to observe health protocols such as social distancing as mandated by the Department of Health in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. The agency will also reduce personnel in counters, but to accommodate more applicants, Galvante said that they are considering to operate during Saturdays. Frontliners will also be prioritized in the opening of offices, the LTO said. Government work was first suspended in Luzon in mid-March after the enforcement of the ECQ within the whole island. Since May 1, only Metro Manila and other high-risk areas remained under total lockdown while other areas were placed to a more relaxed general community quarantine.
