By Mike Crismundo BUTUAN CITY - Mild tectonic earthquakes jolted Agusan del Norte and Surigao del Norte before midnight Friday, April 24, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said. The state agency, however, said the mild earthquakes did not inflict damage or injury. In its bulletin, Phivolcs said a 3.0-magnitude tremor was registered at 11:44 p.m. on April 24. The epicenter was plotted only 4 kilometers (km) away northeast of Santiago town, Agusan del Norte province, it said. The tremor had a shallow depth of only 1 km. Earlier, at 11:20 p.m., a magnitude 2.2 earthquake was also recorded. The epicenter was traced 52 km northeast of Burgos town, Surigao del Norte province, Phivolcs said. The tremor had a shallow depth of only 3 km, the state agency said. At 11:08 p.m. of the same day, a magnitude 3.0 earthquake was also registered and its epicenter was located 66 kms northeast of that same town of Burgos and same province of Surigao del Norte, with a shallow depth of only 1 km., Phivolcs also said, in its bulletin. The Agusan del Norte and Surigao del Norte disaster risk reduction and management councils also reported no damage or injury. The Philippines sits on the Pacific “Ring of Fire” where continental plates collide causing frequent seismic and volcanic activity.
