Military in all-out drive to capture ASG involved in deadly Patikul encounter

ZAMBOANGA CITY – Military authorities have mounted an all-out drive against members of the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) who figured in an encounter with soldiers, Friday, that resulted in the death of 11 soldiers, including a junior officer, and the wounding 13 others in Patikul, Sulu.
Armed Forces of the Philippines-Western Mindanao Command (AFP-WestMinCom) Commander Lt. Gen. Cirilito Sobejana said Amy soldiers mounted Saturday an all-out military operation against the group of ASG leaders Radullan Sahiron and Hatib Hadjan Sawadjaan.
Sobejana said the soldiers believed the two groups were hiding in the forested areas of Sitio Bud Lubong, Barangay Danag in Patikul, Sulu after they figured in the firefight with the military that began at 1:50 p.m. and lasted for an hour.
Sobejana identified the slain soldiers as First Lieutenant Rogelio Deligero Jr., executive officer of the Delta Company of the 21 Infantry Battalion (IB),; Staff Sergeant Jason Gazzingan; corporals John Manodom, Mark Dixter Montenegro, Rasul Ao-As, and Ernesto Bautista; privates first class Benson Bongguic, Jomel Pagulayan, and Premark Vallecer; Private Jiydon Usman; and Corporal Jomar Ninalga.
Wounded were Staff Sergent Alexander B Bolesa,: Sargent Oliver Y Salvador.: Corporals Erick A Curioso,: Jesus P Genora,: Apollo D Papa,: Johnday B Sabaway,: Narciso W Salidad Jr.,:Private First Class Robert M Arias,: Odit P Flores.: Jaypee L Maddawing,: Solomon T Ngayak ,: and Privates RJ G Estiban and Jesrael U Sapao.
According to Sobejana the soldiers were conducting combat and strike operation when they encountered about 40 ASG terrorists led by Sahiron and Sawadjaan at Sitio Bud Lubong in Patikul.
The soldiers also lost six R4 rifles, a K3 SAW, an R4 with attached 40mm GL, and a handheld Harris radio.
Mortar teams of 21IB launched several rounds of 81mm mortar towards the retreading position of the terrorist bringing along with them their wounded and slain comrades, he said.
To date, there were no more reports of any encounter between the soldiers and the ASG in the area.
