DOTr announces routes of free bus service for health, emergency workers

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) announced on Wednesday the routes of buses deployed to ferry frontline health workers amid the implementation of the Luzon-wide enhanced community quarantine. (Czar Dancel / MANILA BULLETIN) Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade (CZAR DANCEL / MANILA BULLETIN FILE PHOTO) Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade said the Department's road sector agencies were directed to deploy free bus service to transport health workers for free after the government suspended all public transport operations in Luzon while the island is under quarantine to contain the spread of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19). Ten buses were initially deployed beginning Wednesday morning to serve health workers at two pick-up points set at the Parañaque Integrated Terminal Exchange (PITX) and at the BFCT East Metro Transport Terminal in Marikina City. According to the DOTr, health workers will be transported to their designated hospitals on the following routes: Route 1: (PITX to Quezon City General Hospital via Makati/Pasig) PITX

The DOTr said these routes are still subject to change depending on the data and requests coming from the Department of Health (DOH). The bus service will also comply with the containment protocols of health authorities such as the implementation of social distancing, body temperature checks, and regular disinfecting of vehicles. "We are racing against time to contain this deadly virus. So this initiative will truly help our frontliners do their jobs as they are the ones who are strenuously and heroically holding the line to keep our country safe," Tugade said. Apart from the free rides for frontline health workers, the DOTr will also set up an operations center for a motorpool for use of officials of the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases. This is to provide swift and unhampered mobility of the task force while the enhanced community quarantine is being enforced, the DOTr explained. President Duterte on Monday placed the Luzon island under an enhanced community quarantine for at least a month as the country continues to combat the increasing cases of COVID-19. Under the proclamation, which is in force until April 14, strict home quarantine in all households will be observed, mass public transportation is suspended, the provision for food and essential health services is regulated, and the presence of uniformed personnel to enforce the quarantine procedures is heightened.
