By Noreen Jazul The University of the Philippines (UP) moved 17 notches up in the 2020 "Emerging Economies University Rankings" of London-based publication, Times Higher Education (THE). (KJ ROSALES / MANILA BULLETIN FILE PHOTO) With an overall score of 37.5, UP placed 70th in THE's latest list of top universities among the world's developing countries, a huge leap from last year's rank at 87. The "Emerging Economies University Rankings" only lists education institutions in countries classified by "the London Stock Exchange’s FTSE Group as 'advanced emerging,' 'secondary emerging,' or 'frontier'." The Philippines was classified by the FTSE as "secondary emerging," alongside China, Russia Federation, United Arab Emirates, and 10 other countries. THE said universities were ranked using the same performance indicators as the World University Rankings but were "recalibrated to reflect the development priorities of universities in emerging economies." The performance indicators were grouped into five: Teaching (the learning environment); Research (volume, income and reputation); Citations (research influence); International outlook (staff, students and research); and Industry income (knowledge transfer). UP scored 86.9 in Citations, 39.4 in Industry Income, 38.1 in International Outlook, 17.2 in Research, and 24.1 in Teaching. Meanwhile, De La Salle University also made it to the list at rank 351-400. Overall, Mainland China ranked highest in the list with Tsinghua University, Peking University, Zhejiang University, and University of Science and Technology of China claiming the top four spots, respectively. It was also the "most-represented" country in the list with 81 institutions.
