Filipino International Master Daniel Quizon pulled off a solid eighth-place finish in the tough Azerbaijan International Online Blitz Chess Tournament Sunday.
Seeded 24th in a stacked, 160-player field, the 16-year-old Quizon made a good account of himself by scoring seven points out of the possible 11, which was good enough for No. 8.
It came on the heels of Quizon’s performance in the qualifying stage where he ended up in a four-way tie for first before winding third overall after tiebreaks were applied.
The Cavite-born bet was also the best Filipino scorer but it did not negate the efforts of Michael Concio Jr., Chester Neil Reyes and Mark Jay Bacojo, who all finished inside the top 21.
It was also a great tune-up for Quizon, Concio and Bacojo, who will spearhead the country’s campaign in the FIDE Online World Cadets and Youth Rapid Championships unfolding Friday.
FIDE Master Khazar Babazada of Azerbaijan and top seed Grandmaster Nodirbek Abdusattorov of Uzbekistan ended up tied for first with 8.5 points apiece but Babazada clinched the title after the tiebreak.
