Pulse Asia: 26 percent of Filipinos support presidential bid of Sara Duterte; Isko Moreno is most preferred VP bet


About a quarter or 26 percent of adult Filipinos rally behind the probable presidential bid of Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte, based on the latest Pulse Asia Ulat ng Bayan Survey.

The nationwide survey, which was conducted from November 23 to December 2, 2020 using 2,400 respondents, showed that the presidential daughter topped as possible contender for the May 2022 presidential poll.

"If the May 2022 presidential election was held during the survey period, around one (1) out of every four (4) Filipino adults (26%) would vote for Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte as the country's new chief executive,” according to Pulse Asia.

The survey result found that Duterte got the support of a small majority of Mindanawons with 58 percent, followed by pluralities in the Visayas with 29 percent and Class D with 26 percent.

Securing the second spot were former senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. and Senator Grace Poe, who got 14 percent rating.

Meanwhile, Manila Mayor Francisco "Isko Moreno” Domagoso ranked third, with 12 percent, followed by Senator Manny Pacquiao with 10 percent, and Vice President Leni Robredo at eight percent.

Senators Panfilo Lacson and Christopher Go got four percent, while Taguig City-Pateros Rep. Alan Peter Cayetano had the support of three percent of adult Filipinos.

Also included in the list of personalities who register presidential voter preferences are Senator Richard Gordon with 0.2 percent and former Supreme Court Associate Justice Antonio Carpio with 0.1 percent.

“On the other hand, four percent of Filipino adults still do not know whom the would elect as president/refuse to identify their preferred presidential bet/are not voting for anyone as president,” the survey noted.

In the National Capital Region (NCR), Marcos emerged as top probable bet with 20 percent rating , followed by Domagoso with 18 percent, Mayor Duterte with 16 percent, and Poe and Pacquiao with 12 percent.

“Those in the rest of Luzon are most supportive of Senator Poe (17 percent), Manila Mayor Domagoso (17percent), former Senator Marcos (16 percent), Vice President Robredo (13 percent), Davao City Mayor Duterte (12 percent), and Senator Pacquiao (9 percent),” the Pulse Asia said.

The pollster noted Duterte is the most preferred presidential bet of those belonging to Class ABC with 27 percent, followed by Marcos with 21 percent.

Duterte remains the preferred presidential candidate of those belonging to Class E. She was followed by Poe with 18 percent and Pacquiao with 14 percent.

The survey noted that in vice-presidential poll, Domagoso emerged as top contender with 17 percent. Landing on the second spot is Duterte with 16 percent rating, followed Senate President Vicente Sotto with 14 percent.

Marcos and Pacquiao both got 11 percent rating, while Go got 9 percent.

According to the Pulse Asia, Domagoso and Sotto with 22 percent and 18 percent enjoy the most support among Metro Manilans, while in the rest of Luzon, Domagoso, Sotto and Marcos recoded the highest levels of support with 20 percent, 18 percent, and 13 percent ratings, respectively.

In the Visayas, Duterte (18 percent), Marcos (16 percent), Pacquiao (15 percent), Domagoso (12 percent) and Sotto (11 percent) got the most support, it said.

In Mindanao, about a third or 32 percent of adult residents favor Duterte over other probable vice-presidential bets.

In Class ABC, Duterte is the top vice presidential bet. While, those in Class D are most inclined to vote for Domagoso. Among those in Class E, Sotto emerged as top vice presidential candidate.

Meanwhile, the Pulse Asia survey noted that most Filipino adults or 58 percent have 12 preferred senatorial candidates for the May 2022 elections.

“Out of 49 probably senatorial bets, 16 have a statistical chance of winning if the said elections coincided with the conduct of survey interviews,” it said.

The survey said most of the 16 probable winners in the senatorial race are either incumbent or former members of Congress.

Senator Pacquaio ranked first, securing a voter preference of 62.1 percent.

In the second and third places is Raffy Tulfo who got the backing of 54.3 percent of Filipino adults, followed by Mayor Duterte who got 50.9 percent rating, putting her in second and fourth places.

Domagoso, meanwhile, posted a 48.4 percent-voter preference that translates to a statistical ranking of third to seventh places.

The pollster said sharing fourth and seventh places are Sorsogon Governor Francis Escudero, and Cayetano with 46.7 percent and 46 percent respectively.

House Deputy Speaker and Antique Lone District Rep. Loren Legarda completed the top half of the list of probable winners with a statistical ranking of fourth to eight places.

Also include in the list of probable winners in the May 2022 senatorial polls are former senator Marcos; Senators Panfilo Lacson, Juan Miguel Zubiri, Sherwin Gatchalian; former senator Jinggoy Estrada; Senators Francis Pangilinan, Risa Hontiveros, Richard Gordon; and Department of Public Works and Highways Secretary Mark Villar.

The survey is based on a sample of 2,400 adults aged 18 years old and above. It has a ±2 percent error margin at the 95 percent confidence level.
