Personnel of the Butuan City Police Station 3 (BCPS-3) were able to raise and send P20,000 to the family of a mother and her son, who were shot dead by a policeman in Paniqui, Tarlac, on December 20.

BCPS-3 Commander Capt. Emerson Alipit said he and his men were able to raise the amount through a “Pass the Hat Challenge” which they initiated after learning of the cold-blooded murder of Sonya and Frank Gregorio by P/Staff Sergeant Jonel Nuezca.
Aside from BCPS-3 personnel, policemen from four other police stations in Butuan City, the city’s Police Mobile Forces Battalion, and Cantillan Police Station also sent their financial assistance.
“The money was received by the Gregorio family through Lt. Col. Noel Rombaoa, the chief of police of Paniqui Municipal Police Station, who assisted us in ensuring that our financial assistance would reach the intended beneficiary,” said Alipit.
According to Alipit, the “Pass the Hat Challenge” was usually done by the police to assist the family of any policeman who needed financial assistance.
But in this case, Alipit explained that they initiated the challenge to send a message that the Philippine National Police (PNP), as an organization, did not condone the action of a colleague, who was responsible for the twin murder.
Sonya’s husband Florentino Gregorio expressed his gratitude to the personnel of the Butuan City police for their assistance.
“I thank the policemen from the Butuan City Police Station 3 for their assistance. This is a big help for us,” said Gregorio.
Nuezca was already charged with two cases of murder and is set to be dismissed from the service in the coming days. He is currently under the custody of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) after the court handling the case issued a commitment order.
