Depressed farmer, slashes arm, hangs self

NAMPICUAN, Nueva Ecija - A 45-year-old farmer commited suicide by slashing his arm and hanging himself inside a nipa hut in barangay South Central Poblacion at around 8:00 a.m. Tuesday.

PSSg Raymond Alpindo, police investigator, identified the victim as Arnel Mejia, a resident of Barangay Estacion, who hanged himself with a bed sheet wrapped around his neck.

The victim's lifeless body was discovered by a certain Renato Ibarra of barangay Ambassador, who sought help from the police.

A police report disclosed that the victim, who was suffering from depression, appeared to have first attempted to commit suicide by slashing his left wrist with a knife (labaha) which was found several steps away from where the victim's body was found.

"Ang assessment po namin gusto talaga niyang tiyakin na hindi na siya mabubuhay pa kaya bukod sa paglalaslas ng pulso ay nagbigti pa ang biktima," Alpindo said. (He really wanted to die so he made sure that he slashed his wrist first then hanged himself.)
