DAVAO CITY - The Municipality of Santo Tomas has recorded its first fatality due to the coronavirus disease (COVID-19).
In a statement on Monday night, Municipal Health Officer Dr. June P. Lim said a 27 year-old woman from Barangay Tulalian died due to COVID-19 at the Davao Regional Medical Center in Tagum City last December 27.
“She was immediately intubated due to asphyxia and subjected to an emergency caesarean operation as she delivered a live baby boy on the same date,” Lim said.
A postmortem swabbing done on the patient yielded a positive result for COVID-19. Lim said the patient’s baby was negative for COVID-19.
Lim said the patient was admitted last December 24 due to difficulty in breathing and pre-eclampsia.
She said the patient contracted the virus from her husband who works in a banana plantation in Panabo City. He said the husband is under isolation at the DRMC.
The Municipality of Santo Tomas currently has 19 active cases out of the 69 reported cases.
Meanwhile, as of December 28, Davao region has recorded 29 new active cases, five deaths, and 85 recoveries.
The region has recorded a total of 12,209 COVID-19 cases, 487 fatalities, and 9,883 recoveries.
Based on the Regional Daily Case Bulletin, Davao region currently has 1,839 active cases.
