Man rescued after staying in tree for 16 hours in Negros city

BACOLOD CITY - A man who climbed a Santol tree in Barangay Zone 12-A, Talisay City, Negros Occidental and stayed there for 16 hours was rescued on Sunday.

According to Cpl. Michael Tembrevilla, investigator of Talisay City Police Station, the 29-year-old man went to his cousin’s house late Saturday afternoon to hide after claiming that he was being chased by unidentified men who threatened to kill him.

However, when he arrived at his cousin's house at around 5 p.m., instead of going inside the house, he climbed the 40-foot tree and did not go down.

His cousin asked help from the authorities. A negotiation followed but he refused to go down fearing for his life.

To ensure his safety, police, rescuers, and firemen stayed at the bottom of the tree until he decided to go down at around 9 a.m. the following day through the assistance of the village chief who gave him P500.

Tembrevilla said the victim had not slept and eaten for two days after having an argument with his partner.

This was the second time that the man claimed that someone was chasing him. His family claimed that he had no history of trauma.

The victim had no injuries and was rescued safely.
