ECC looking at increasing employees' cash benefits afflicted with COVID-19

The Employees Compensation Commission (ECC) on Thursday said possibility of increasing the cash benefits of employees afflicted with coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is being studied.

"We already requested for an actuarial study to be conducted by the Social Security System (SSS) to determine if our funds can accommodate that kind of increase in cash assistance," ECC Executive Director Stella Zipagan-Banawis said during the Laging Handa press briefing.
 
"All benefits we are providing must undergo actuarial studies for the proper allocation of funds," she added.
 
Last week, Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III said the P10,000 cash assistance under the Employees’ Compensation Program (ECP) to employees found positive of COVID-19 should be increased.
 
"It's a mere P10,000 that's why there's a need to increase the benefits of workers," he said.
 
"The minimum should be P50,000 when a worker gets sick and not just P10,000," added Bello. 
 
The labor chief is convinced that the ECC has enough funds for this.
 
"It has P90 billion funds that is available to benefit employees," said Bello.
 
ECC, is an attached agency of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), which provides a package of benefits to employees who met work-connected sickness or injury which resulted to disability or death.
