Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Eduardo Año stressed Wednesday that the country’s police officers generally perform their peace-keeping tasks and crime-busting duties to the best of their abilities.

In an interview over GMA News, Año issued the statement to dispute the public's general assessment of policemen as being “abusive” following the killing of a mother and her son in Paniqui, Tarlac, by a policeman at the height of a heated argument.
The incident which was caught on video and went viral on social media has sparked public outcry on the supposed police abuses.
But Año maintained that 99 percent of policemen in the country are still doing their duties.
He emphasized that Police MasterSgt. Jonel Nuezca is in the minority of rogue cops stressing that it is unfair to generalize and brand all police officers as abusive and corrupt.
The DILG chief maintained that such acts would never be tolerated by the government.
“The sin of Nuezca is not the sin of the entire Philippine National Police. As we have seen during this pandemic, they place their very lives on the line as frontliners in our COVID response," Año had noted.
Inside his jail cell, Nuezca expressed deep regret over the incident and was already indicted for two counts of murder.
