The Manila city government on Monday broke ground for the Basecommunity, another of its public housing projects at the Baseco Community.

The Basecommunity will be a townhouse structure. Each house will measure 20 square meters in lot area and 42 square meters in floor area and will have two bedrooms, a living room, dining room, kitchen, bathroom, study area, and service area.
Manila Mayor Francisco "Isko Moreno" Domagoso, who led the groundbreaking ceremony, said he expects the project to finish construction by March 2021.
Domagoso said the Basecommunity project is in line with his dream to provide decent and affordable housing to each resident of the capital city, particularly the poor.
"Kailangan matutunan ng tao na maitaas ang antas ng kaniyang pamumuhay, tapos 'yung gobyerno, katabi niya (The people must learn how to elevate their level of living, and the government must be beside them)," he said in his speech.
"Ngayon ang simula, sa awa ng Diyos, ng magandang umaga at bagong simbolo ng pagpapataas ng antas ng buhay ng tao sa lungsod ng Maynila (With God's mercy, now is the start of a good morning and a new symbol of elevating the level of living of the residents of the City of Manila)," he added.
The local chief executive warned those who will get to live in the Basecommunity that they are not allowed to sell or rent their living spaces.
Under the "Land for the Landless" project, the city government broke ground for three vertical housing projects, namely Tondominium 1, Tondominium 2, and Binondominium.
They will also acquire 191.05 hectares of land for development into “socialized housing projects” for 14,785 households living at "critical zones" from 2020 to 2025.
