Insensitive comments of 'criminology student' regarding Tarlac shooting goes viral

UPHS: 'The only student who may match the description of the commenter left the University for academic reasons'

The University of Perpetual Help System (UPHS) Laguna has officially addressed the viral comments made by a "supposed former criminology student" on social media regarding the Tarlac shooting that killed a mother and son, Sonya Gregorio, 52, and Frank Anthony Gregorio, 25, respectively. The suspect in the shooting, Police Senior Master Sgt. Jonel Nuezca has since surrendered to the police with his issued firearm, which has been confirmed to be the weapon used in the shooting.

A post from the official Facebook page of the UPHS Biñan Campus, the main campus of the JONELTA system addressed how "in this tragedy, the name of the University of Perpetual Help System Laguna has been included because of a negative comment of a supposed former criminology student."

The post does not include the name of the "supposed former criminology student," however, it is assumed that they are referring to the netizen whose comments were screenshotted by the Facebook page Tuguegarao Patrol.

The comment in the screenshot, posted by an account under the name Ejay Escobar, reads: "HAHAHAHA I DON'T CARE EEH EH EH KA PA... teluk mo naman lola.. kahit ako bubutasan kita ganyanin mo anak ko ." (You are so irritating... I would put a hole in you too if it was my child)

It has been reported that the Tarlac shooting happened after the daughter of Nuezca was involved in an argument with the younger Gregorio. The argument escalated when the police officer suddenly shot both Gregorios in the head at close range with his issued firearm.

The post by Tuguegarao Patrol on their Facebook page identifies the netizen commenter as a criminology student and includes a link to a now deactivated Facebook account, assumed to be that of the netizen. The screenshot has been shared over 66,000 times as of writing. The original screenshot post has over 8,000 comments, most of which are Filipino netizens expressing their anger at the insensitivity of the comment, others sharing screenshots of their messages to UPHS, the supposed school of the commenter.

It came to the attention of the UPHS that the Facebook profile of the netizen "indicates that he 'studies Criminology at the University of Perpetual Hope System JONELTA.'"

"As we appreciate the concerns of netizens sending us emails and messages, we deem it necessary to inform everyone that the said commenter is not connected or more so enrolled in the University of Perpetual Hope System Laguna – JONELTA System," the official post goes on to read. "We owe it to our fellow Perpetualities to say that the only student who may match the description of the commenter based on social media left the University in 2007 for academic reasons. Needless to say, said student did not acquire a degree from the University."

The UPHS ended their post saying, "The Perpetualite Communities mourns with the nation because of this tragedy. We equally condemn this the subject of the 'comment.' And we pray for the souls of the victims be with our Creator."
