President Duterte has vowed to continue to purchase modern equipment to enhance the military's capability in dealing with security challenges.
The President committed to sustain the military's modernization program after thanking the troops for their contribution in addressing the coronavirus pandemic, natural disasters and other calamities that hit the country this year.
Duterte made the statement when he attended the 85th anniversary celebration of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) via video conference in Davao City.
"The trials we faced this year underscored the need to make the AFP even more responsive to the most challenging of situations. I therefore reiterate my unyielding commitment to pursue the full implementation of the AFP Modernization Program," he said.
"We will continue to enhance your skills through capacity building initiatives and the procurement of modern equipment that will enable you to fulfill your mandate with the highest degree of expertise and professionalism," he added.
The commander-in-chief first commended the military for their "selfless service" to the nation, especially in helping the people cope with the pandemic.
He said the coronavirus outbreak has become the "most daunting health crisis in recent history" faced by the nation. He said the invisible enemy caused a pandemic that affected the world and changed people's way of life.
"Despite its very insidious nature, the entire nation witnessed how the AFP fought proudly at the frontlines alongside our valiant health workers," he said.
"Your crucial role in the crafting of the National Action Plan Against COVID-19 was complemented by the deployment of military personnel at various quarantine and swabbing facilities and local communities to help curb the spread of the virus," he added.
Talking about the recent typhoons, Duterte praised the troops for their bravery in shielding the people from harm, helping them "rise above the ruins,” and "risking your lives in the process."
"On behalf of a grateful nation, I express my most profound gratitude to you for your willingness to serve at the frontlines as our nation faced these natural disasters, calamities, and a global pandemic. Your involvement in these efforts enabled the government to remain on top of the situation and maintain order," he said.
The President also asked the military to continue "to protect the Constitution, uphold our sovereignty, and look forward to healing and genuine progress."
"While this year has indeed been a very difficult one for all of us, it is also a fitting time to celebrate the founding of the AFP – an institution that was built to withstand these hardships and serve the Filipino people at all costs,"he said.
"Let us look forward to the coming year without losing sight of all that we have been through as a nation. May the history of our struggle for freedom, peace and inclusive progress rekindle the patriotism in your hearts that made you join this elite organization," he added.
