Saguiguit is new Altas coach

University of Perpetual Help System DALTA has named Mike Saguiguit as the new Altas head coach, ending months of speculations after Frankie Lim opted to resign back in September.

Anton Tamayo, who is the school board liaison officer in charge of the athletic program, made the announcement on Saguiguit’s promotion after serving as an assistant coach for several years.

Aside from being the head coach of the senior’s team, Saguiguit will also look after the high school basketball program though he relinquished his coaching position to assistant coach Joph Cleofas.

“He’s now the coach starting December 1,” said Tamayo, himself a former varsity player of the Altas.

Saguiguit had actually been calling the shots on an interim basis after the resignation of Lim. Last season, Perpetual Help missed the Final Four following a dismal 5-13 record.

“He (Cleofas) will be the new high school coach but I will still look after them as we only have one program,” said the 46-year-old Saguiguit.

Aside from the 6-foot-7 sophomore Mario Barasi, Jr., Saguiguit said they have retained the core of the team from last season headed by skipper Jielo Razon, Ben Adamos and Tonton Peralta.
