In a bid to make its roads safer for motorists, the Manila city government installed street lamps along the stretch of Taft Avenue Thursday night.Â

Manila Mayor Francisco "Isko Moreno" Domagoso, who led the lighting ceremony, said the lamp posts were installed from the Manila City Hall in Ermita, Manila up to the boundary of Pasay City.
Domagoso said the "straightforward" lighting that they installed has numerous benefits for residents of the city and motorists passing by Manila's roads.Â

"This is our effort for road safety, especially sa gabi (at night). On top of our solar studs, lining, and 'yung ating (and our) no contact apprehension program, tapos, para mas panatag 'yung mga nagmamaneho sa gabi, may (so that drivers will feel at ease even at night because there is) illumination," he told reporters.
"Sa dami ng camera sa Maynila, plus may ilaw, papanatag ang mga tao, ligtas ang mga nagmamaneho as much as possible (With all the cameras in Manila, plus the lighting, people will be assured, drivers will be safe as much as possible)," he added.
The local chief executive also said that with the improved lighting in the city, criminals will find it difficult to use the dark to commit crimes.
The city government earlier implemented the no-contact apprehension program (NCAP), wherein 36 "highly efficient" cameras were placed along the capital city's roads to catch erring motorists and capture photos of their license plates.
They also installed solar studs along Roxas Boulevard and at least 172 lamp posts along España Boulevard.
Domagoso said they plan to light up the stretch of Ronquillo Street up to the boundary of Caloocan City along R. Papa Street by next year.
He also said that they will place ample lighting at parks, major thoroughfares, and other areas frequented by people.
