Megawide-GMR appealing revocation of OPS for P109B NAIA Rehab

Published Dec 16, 2020 09:31 am

The Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) revoked the Original Proponent Status (OPS) of Megawide and GMR Infrastructure’s P109 billion proposal to rehabilitate the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) with "no reason given" and the proponents last night (December 15) told reporters they are appealing for reconsiderarion.

Asked if the government gave any basis for the move, the proponent stated, "None. They just informed us that our OPS was cancelled."

At a time of economic crisis, the government's move was "a devastating blow against progress", Megawide-GMR declared in their statement.

The rehabilitation of NAIA, "a critical step towards national economic recovery was delayed further by vested and corrupt interests who have spent millions in trying to bring down the only capable and qualified player", according to the statement.

Megawide-GMR will immediately file a motion for reconsideration for its proposal.

At all stages, Megawide has complied with all requirements and interpretations of the government for its unsolicited proposal.
"There are no justifiable grounds to deny the Filipino people a transformed NAIA," the proponent insisted.

Megawide and GMR Infrastructure (GMR) first submitted a proposal for the rehabilitation of NAIA in 2018.

After nearly two years of failed discussions with several of the country's largest conglomerates, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) asked Megawide five months ago to consider resubmitting its proposal to rehabilitate the NAIA.

The Philippine national government even insisted on contract terms that were stricter than those given to the first proponent.

In response to the government's call, Megawide said they submitted an innovative proposal that sought not just to rehabilitate NAIA but transform it into a first-world, global airport complex.

As the only Filipino company to design, engineer, and operate the Philippines’ only world-class airport today – the Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA), in tandem with GMR Infrastructure, the world’s fourth largest airport operator, Megawide said it has proven its real-world airport experience and success.

Under the proposal, Megawide and GMR will not only rehabilitate facilities but will also uplift and upskill the livelihoods of thousands of airport employees to make them experts in their fields.

In September 2020 Megawide delivered the Clark International Airport to the DOTr, ahead of schedule and under budget.

No other company can claim this record of excellence in airport design, engineering, construction and delivery, the company said.

This November, Megawide and GMR celebrated their sixth anniversary operating the MCIA.

"We will break the chains of backwardness, corruption and inefficiency that have held back our main gateway’s progress and that of our nation," Megawide pledged.

"Our company and people, our partners and stakeholders in airports and other vital infrastructure, remain fully committed to our mission. No backward thinking, no entities with vested interests can truly bring down progress and the spirit of A First World Philippines."
