Seventeen containers of agricultural goods such as carrots and broccoli from China worth P9.3 million were recently seized at the Port of Subic, the Bureau of Customs said Wednesday.

Instead of the declared contents, which are frozen jams, boxes of fresh carrots and broccoli were found in the shipment consigned to Zhenpin Consumer Goods Trading.
It arrived at the Port of Subic last November 22 and was the subject of an alert on November 27, District Collector Maritess Martin said.
The containers underwent inspection headed by the Customs bureau in collaboration with the Presidential Anti-Corruption Commission, National Bureau of Investigation, and Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority.
The shipment was then seized in violation of Section 1113 (f) in relation to Section 1400 of the Republic Act No. 10863 otherwise known as the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act and the Department of Agriculture Circular No. 04 series of 2006.
Martin said a hearing will be conducted within the week to further investigate the incident.
The district collector also reassured stakeholders and the public “that the port will remain vigilant against the entry of smuggled goods.”
