The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) will launch an independent probe to look into the "appalling" killing of their security guard in front of the CHR - Region IX office in Zamboanga on December 13.

The security guard was shot dead in front of their regional office. CHR Spokesperson Atty. Jacqueline de Guia said that they are strongly condemning the brazen attack, which "speaks of the pervasiveness of violence and the thick shroud of impunity that darken our society."
"This appalling crime also has security and safety implications to the CHR as an institution considering that it happened in front of our regional office," said de Guia.
"Amidst the prevalence of red-tagging and the continuing intimidation and disinformation against the Commission for its steadfast push for human rights, this act of violence within our compound is deeply concerning," she added.
As the Commission launched an immediate investigation to resolve the case, they are also calling on the local Philippine National Police (PNP) to urgently conduct a parallel and thorough investigation so as to hold the perpetrators accountable.
The incident also highlights the need for the CHR to tighten its security measures so as to prevent any further risk or violence.
De Guia said they are deeply disheartened by the act of violence that took place amidst a pandemic. She said the Filipino people all deserve a just and humane society, free from violence and impunity, so the government must concretely address these acts of atrocities on the ground.
"CHR offers its deepest condolences and heartfelt prayers to the family of our security personnel," she said. "We shall provide all necessary assistance to his bereaved wife and three daughters."
