'Bubble' training for Tokyo Olympics-bound athletes may resume -- IATF

Filipino athletes competing in the Tokyo Olympics will be allowed to resume training based on a latest decision of the government pandemic task force.

Presidential spokesman Harry Roque announced Tuesday that the athletes' training must be conducted in a "bubble-type" setting as a precaution against the spread of the coronavirus.

The training bubble for national athletes endorsed by the Presidential Sports Commission (PSC) was approved by the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Infectious Diseases (IATF) during a meeting Monday. A bubble camp refers to an isolated place where the athletes are expected to live and train under health and safety protocols.

"The request of the Philippine Olympic Committee to resume the training of national athletes vying for the Tokyo Olympics in a 'bubble-type' setting is approved," the IATF resolution No. 88 read.

"For this purpose, the Philippine Sports Commission, the Games and Amusement Board, and the Department of Health are directed to amend their issuance accordingly," it added.

The task force said the training bubble of the athletes must be made in coordination with the Regional Task Force where the training shall be conducted and the local government unit with the jurisdiction of the proposed venue.

The 2020 Tokyo Olympics have been postponed for a year following the disruption caused by the coronavirus pandemic. The games have been rescheduled to open on July 23, 2021 and close on August 8.
