UAAP athletes, fans express sadness over Season 83 cancellation

Several collegiate stars have expressed sadness over the cancellation of the UAAP Season 83 due to the threat brought by the coronavirus pandemic.

It was another heartbreaking moment for some student-athletes since the remainder of Season 82 was also scrapped eight months ago.

An academic year will just pass by without any UAAP schools competing against each other, making it the first time an entire season was put on a standstill since World War II.

Volleyball stars Eya Laure of University of Santo Tomas and Ateneo's Dani Ravena were among the few athletes who took to social media their sentiments over the cancellation.

One fan account dedicated to former La Salle volleyball star Kianna Dy and Ateneo recruit Dwight Ramos, who shone bright during the second leg of the 2021 FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers in Manama, Bahrain, had mixed emotion about the news and pointed out that many were excited to see some athletes play.

"It's so sad na di tuloy ang UAAP this season, but it is for their safety naman. Let's just pray na maging okay na lahat at matuloy na ang UAAP," a certain @KKDwight_ tweeted.

Even former Ateneo standout Thirdy Ravena, brother of Dani, who now plays in the Japan B.League, was also heartbroken over the announcement.

"I feel for the athletes right now," wrote the former UAAP men's basketball Most Valuable Player.

Former Tiger Spiker Jayvee Sumagaysay has his own way to bring positivity amid these trying times, encouraging fellow athletes to continue training and dreaming.

"To all the student-athletes, keep workin' your a** off and don’t stop chasin' your dreams!" the national volleyball team member tweeted.

Meanwhile, the cancellation of UAAP Season 83 may have prompted some players to bring their talents to the professional level.

Jerrick Ahanmisi of Adamson University, for instance, has let go of his final UAAP playing year and declared to join for next year's PBA draft.

The UAAP has prioritized the well-being of the student-athletes, citing "health and safety" concerns for the decision to scrap the season.
