Tacloban city mayor tests positive for COVID-19

TACLOBAN CITY - The Tacloban City Media Center confirmed that City Mayor Alfred Romualdez tested positive for the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) on Thursday, December 10.

Romualdez was the fifth mayor in Eastern Visayas to have contracted the dreaded disease that has also affected at least 9,185 individuals in the region.

He was also among the 65 new cases logged in Region 8 on Thursday. Of these, 14 came from the city, while 2 COVID-19 fatalities were also recorded.

Meanwhile, his wife, former mayor Cristina Gonzalez Romualdez said on a social media post that she tested negative for the disease.

The city’s first lady said she was in Tacloban three weeks ago, so she has not been exposed to her husband as she was already in Manila when the mayor may have contracted the disease.

"Please keep Mayor Alfred in your prayers," she asked.

The mayor has yet to release a statement.
