A pregnant woman about to give birth and seven others were injured when a passenger bus hit an ambulance on EDSA Friday (December 11) morning, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) said.
The pregnant woman who was being rushed to the hospital aboard the ambulance when the incident happened at about 7:40 a.m. was identified as Jennalyn Ricaplaza, 21. The other victims have yet to be identified.
The MMDA Metrobase said both vehicles were travelling northbound along Macapagal Avenue when the bus turned right to EDSA and hit the barangay ambulance. The bus driver claimed the ambulance suddenly appeared causing it to be thrown to the center island.
“The bus driver, meanwhile, tried maneuver his vehicle to the southbound lane of EDSA to avoid the ambulance,” personnel of the MMDA Metrobase said.
“Apparently, the barangay ambulance was from Las Piñas City and was rushing to the hospital as the woman was in labor,” the MMDA said
Traffic investigators said four ambulance passengers and four bus passengers were injured.
“We were unable to ask the ambulance driver for his side as he was in pain, and was quickly brought to the hospital.”
All the injured passengers were rushed to the Pasay General Hospital.
The pregnant woman, however, was later transferred to Fabella Hospital.
“She sustained hematoma and injury on the left side of her face,” the MMDA Metrobase said.
The MMDA Metrobase said vehicles should always give way to emergency vehicles.
The bus driver, MMDA said, is now under the custody of the Pasay City Traffic Bureau.
