INSET training may be used to hold makeup classes
An official of the Department of Education (DepEd) said that schools may use the scheduled In-Service Training (INSET) period to hold makeup classes for students.

DepEd Undersecretary for Curriculum and Instruction Diosdado San Antonio said that schools in areas where classes were suspended during typhoons are allowed to use the week-long INSET Training period for makeup classes.
As cited in the adjusted school calendar for School Year (SY) 2020-2021, DepEd has set Friday, Dec. 12, as the last day of classes for the first grading period or Quarter 1. The annual INSET Week has been scheduled from Dec. 14 to 19.
During the INSET Training Week, students do not have classes since their teachers will attend seminars, workshops, conferences, and other related activities that “would help the teachers update their knowledge, skills, and competencies.” DepEd said that the INSET Training is an annual “learning and development activity” for teachers and staff.
However, San Antonio explained that while students in schools that did not suspend classes may already start their break, “learners in areas with class suspensions during typhoons and floods may spend time for makeup classes during the INSET period for teachers.”
Make up classes are conducted in lieu of suspension of classes due to inclement weather, celebrations, and holidays, among others. Saturdays are usually used for the conduct of makeup classes to ensure that students will be able to catch up on the lessons or school days that they have missed.
However, DepEd said that holding of makeup classes by schools is “optional,” granted that the required contact days for teaching and learning remain intact.
Aside from using Saturdays for makeup classes, DepEd said that schools may implement other strategies such as extending the number of school hours on weekdays. Teachers may also give the additional homework or assignments to students in lieu of the school days they have lost due to suspension of classes.
