
The 2020 Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMA) was held on Dec. 6 hosted by Korean actor and “Descendants of the Sun” star Song Joong-ki.
K-pop boy band BTS bagged all the four daesang, or grand prize, at this year’s MAMA. They won Artist of the Year, the fifth straight year that they won the award since 2016, based on official votes, 30 percent; MAMA judges’ evaluation, 30 percent; digital song sales, 20 percent; and album sales, 20 percent.
“Map of the Soul: 7” emerged as Album of the Year, BTS’ third consecutive year since 2018 to achieve the feat, based on judges’ evaluation, 40 percent and album sales, 60 percent.
“Dynamite” won Song of the Year, a third straight year for the idol group, based on judges’ evaluation, 40 percent; digital song sales, 30 percent; official votes, 20 percent; and album sales, 10 percent.
BTS also won Worldwide Icon of the Year, their third since the award was introduced in 2018, with the official votes accounting for 60 percent; and social media votes and global music video views, 20 percent each.
This is also the second straight year that BTS took home all the four grand prizes at stake at MAMA. They also bagged the Best Male Group, Best Music Video for “Dynamite,” Best Dance Performance (Male Group) and Worldwide Fans' Choice Top 10.
The Worldwide Fans’ Choice Top 10 (official votes, 60 percent; social media votes, 20 percent; and global music video views, 20 percent) winners are BTS, BLACKPINK, NCT, Seventeen, TXT, ATEEZ, GOT7, TWICE, Mamamoo and Treasure.
Treasure won the Best New Male Artist at MAMA after getting snubbed at the Melon Music Awards (MMA) on Dec. 5 while Weekly won Best New Female Artist.
Besides the Worldwide Fans’ Choice Top 10, BLACKPINK also won Best Female Group and Best Dance Performance (Female Group).
