Mendiola beats Maharlika for first PFL win

Mendiola FC 1991 nailed its first win in the Philippines Football League after blanking Maharlika-Manila 2-0 Monday at the PFF National Training Center in Carmona, Cavite.

Jan Aaron Nebrija and Jim Ashley Flores scored in each half as Mendiola gained the maximum three points for the first time in the shortened season supported by Qatar Airways.

The win was a build-up to Mendiola’s previous performance when it held fancied Kaya-Iloilo to a scoreless draw last Friday.

Mendiola improved to four points for fourth place with one match remaining against Stallion-Laguna on Thursday morning.

Maharlika ended its maiden PFL campaign with three points in five matches, but lost the last three by a combined margin of 17-0.

Nebrija delivered the opener and Mendiola’s first goal inside the bubble in the 25th minute when he scored a header after Aaron Altiche’s long attempt hit the crossbar.

Mendiola had to deal with multiple tries by Maharlika to equalize before a counterattack led to Flores finding the back of the net entering stoppage time.
