Mordido stamps class in youth chess qualifiers

Woman Grandmaster candidate Kylen Joy Mordido blew away the field in leading the march to the grand finals while International Master Daniel Quizon and Jerlyn Mae San Diego faced rough sailing in the local qualifying tournament for the FIDE Online World Cadets and Youth Rapid Chess Championships Saturday.

Mordido, 18, swept all four of her games and should be the favorite to claim the top spot in the finale of the premier girls’ Under-18 division and the lone berth as the Philippine representative to the world tilt slated Nov. 27 to Dec. 23.

It was not the same for Quizon and San Diego, members of the country’s online Olympiad squad, as the two faced some struggles and wound up second in the open U18 and girls’ U16, respectively.

Paul Matthew Llanillo finished tied for first with Quizon but took the top spot with a better tiebreak score.

With the exception of girls’ U18 which drew only five entrants, the top 12 finishers in all age categories including open and girls U10, U12, U14 and U16 made it to the 11-round finals that was reset from Sunday to next week.

Michael Concio likewise lived up to his top billing as he ruled the open U16 class with seven points.

The winner in the finals per division will then represent the country in the world tilt.

Other category winners in the elimination round were Al Basher Buto (U10), Gio Troy Ventura (U12), Franiel Magpily (U10), Kaye Regidor (U12) and April Joy Claros (U14).
