Getting closer to the twice-to-beat advantage holds more importance than gaining the solo lead as Barangay Ginebra San Miguel and TNT clash Friday in the PBA Philippine Cup at the Angeles University Foundation Sports and Cultural Center.
Ginebra and TNT face off at 6:45 p.m. with the winner climbing into the top of the standings while also boosting its chances of securing the important bonus once the quarterfinals begin late next week.
San Miguel (5-3) returns to action less than 24 hours after losing to Phoenix Super LPG when it takes on streaking NLEX (3-5) at 4 p.m. as part of the third four-game bill of the eliminations inside the bubble known as Smart Clark Giga City.
Well-rested Alaska (5-4) tries to keep its slim chances of gaining the twice-to-beat against NorthPort (1-6) at 1 p.m. while the 10 a.m. opener pits slumping Blackwater (2-5) and winless Terrafirma (0-7).
The Ginebra-TNT is among the possible finals previews since the season resumed, given both squad’s depth and performance.
Stanley Pringle (19.6 points, 6.3 rebounds and 3.5 assists), Scottie Thompson (12.1 points, 8.9 rebounds, 6.3 assists and 1.4 steals), Prince Caperal (11.0 points) and Aljon Mariano (9.5 points, 6.0 rebounds and 3.1 assists) have been Ginebra’s consistent performers while Japeth Aguilar (13.0 points, 6.5 rebounds and 1.4 blocks) has slowly regained his form.
TNT has held the top spot since the restart last month mainly because of Ray Parks Jr. (22.6 points, 7.3 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 1.4 steals), RR Pogoy (19.9 points, 5.5 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 2.0 steals), Jayson Castro (17.0 points, 5.7 assists and 1.4 steals), Troy Rosario (13.0 points and 8.9 rebounds) and Poy Erram (12.8 points, 8.0 rebounds and 2.1 assists).
Ginebra coach Tim Cone, whose team won its last two after a 4-0 start was followed by back-to-back losses, said that getting the top seed will be fine and dandy but he would rather see his team focus on the quarterfinal bonus given the four best teams after the elims.
