Back to his old role, Gayoso glad to help ADT

Jarvey Gayoso may have convinced coach Scott Cooper of possibly moving him back to his natural role as striker following a Man of the Match performance in the Azkals Development Team’s victory over Mendiola FC 1991.

Playing left back since the shortened Philippines Football League season began last week, Gayoso came through with the opening goal in ADT’s 2-0 win at the PFF National Training Center in Carmona, Cavite after being moved up front midway in the second half.

“It’s given me food for thought. It is something that we can ponder on moving forward,” Cooper said of Gayoso’s performance against Mendiola. “Let’s see if he can play the next game at striker. We’ll take a look at it.”

Football fans have been debating even before the PFL bubble started if Gayoso suits well playing the forward position he’s been accustomed during his UAAP days with Ateneo or adapt to the role of being in the back as the last line of defense.

The son of former Ginebra cager Jayvee Gayoso and grandson of former football and basketball great Ed Ocampo produced 50 goals while leading Ateneo to two UAAP men’s football championships.

While Cooper believes Gayoso can succeed at left back, that doesn’t mean that he has ruled out any changes.

As for Gayoso, he would rather play the role of a good soldier than to make any preferences.

“I was just happy in helping my team win and trust coach Scott in whatever position he thinks is best,” said Gayoso. “But I welcome the chance to be back in my old role as a striker.”

Gayoso’s contribution enabled ADT to score the first points of the season after consecutive 1-0 defeats to title contenders United City FC and Kaya-Iloilo.

ADT is leveled with Maharlika-Manila, its next opponent, at three points each but holds third spot on goal difference.
