Montejo named as new PNP Central Visayas chief

CEBU CITY -- The new regional director of the Police Regional Office in Central Visayas (PRO 7) will assume his post Tuesday, December 1.

Police Brig. Gen. Ronnie Montejo, a former chief of the Quezon City Police District, will be replacing Police Brig. Gen. Albert Ignatius Ferro.

Lt. Gen. Guillermo Eleazar, the Philippine National Police's (PNP) Deputy Chief for Administration, will be the presiding officer in the turnover of command ceremony at the Camp Sergio Osmena Sr. here.

The change of leadership at PRO 7 came a few weeks after PNP Chief Gen. Debold Sinas, a former PRO-7 director himself, was installed as chief of the 200,000-strong PNP.

In his command visit at PRO 7 Headquarters last November 21, Sinas hinted that Ferro was due for a transfer as part of his career advancement.

Ferro was named PRO 7 chief last February 6, and led an intensified illegal drug campaign that resulted in the seizure of more than P700-million worth of shabu.

Ferro was recently declared as an adopted son of Cebu City.

The Cebu City Council approved a resolution that recognized Ferro's contribution in the anti-criminality campaign and in the city's coronavirus disease (COVID-19) efforts.

In the resolution, the City Council noted that from February 6 to October 23 this year, the city recorded 31,706 total crime incidents (TCI), which is 36.5 percent lower compared to the same period last year.

Ferro likewise spearheaded the construction of a molecular laboratory to beef up the COVID-19 testing capacity for the police and other frontliners.
