League-leading TNT vented its ire on NorthPort with a fiery first half before rolling to a 112-87 victory Tuesday night in the PBA Philippine Cup at the Angeles University Foundation Sports and Cultural Center.
The Tropang Giga pulled away midway in the first quarter before they widened the gap in the second period on their way to winning for the sixth time in seven matches while virtually securing a spot in the quarterfinals.
TNT also got its hot form back after a six-game unbeaten start was halted last Thursday by NLEX, 109-98.
“We really prepared very hard for this, especially coming off a long break and coming from loss,” said Tropang Giga coach Bong Ravena. “It just happened that we caught NorthPort on a bad day. Swerte lang kami.”
Ray Parks Jr. hit 22 points on 8-of-14 shooting while Roger Pogoy added 15 points as they were among the five Tropang Giga players who scored in double figures.
Parks, Pogoy and Ryan Reyes scored six points each in the first quarter that gave TNT a 30-13 lead, setting the tone for the match to turn into a walkthrough for its match against Magnolia at 4 p.m. the following day.
Troy Rosario had 14 points and 10 rebounds while reserves Jay Washington and Almond Vosotros took advantage of the big minutes as they got to each score 11 points, both season-highs.
The rout also allowed TNT to rest Jayson Castro, who played just nine minutes and had seven points and six assists.
TNT led by a high of 36 points in the third quarter, 86-50, further adding to the frustration of NorthPort.
No one was more frustrated on the NorthPort side than the temperamental Kelly Nabong, who was seen late in the second quarter putting his arms away from Paolo Taha during a timeout.
Nabong later threw the ball as if he was a quarterback in frustration as the second quarter ended with the Batang Pier behind 54-30, hitting the LED board.
He finished with 15 points as the Batang Pier, still missing bubble participant Sean Anthony due to an injury, dropped to 1-5.
