Cagayan folk warned against handling unexploded bombs

CAGAYAN – As more unexploded ordnance (UXO) are being recovered in parts of this province, the Police Regional Office 2 (PRO-2) is warning the public to be careful because these could be potentially deadly.

PRO-2 Information Officer Lt. Col. Andree Abella said they issued the warning after the reported recovery of two UXOs in Cagayan towns in the aftermath of the massive flooding in the province.

“People must be reminded that these items are dangerous, and, hence, they should not attempt to keep any of these as souvenirs or use them for any purpose,” PRO-2 Director Brig. Gen. Crizaldo O. Nieves said.

Nieves also assured the public that police personnel will be at-the-ready to respond in recovering and disposing of UXOs.

Abella said the latest UXO that was recovered was a 105mm high explosive bomb in Barangay Nabaccayan, Gattaran, Cagayan.
“Naghuhukay lang ng canal iyong mga tao para sa drainage system nila. Kabahayan po iyon saka nakita, “ Abella told Manila Bulletin.

Earlier, a farmer found a UXO near the Cagayan river in Barangay Linao West in Tuguegarao City on Tuesday.

Then on Wednesday another bomb was found in Gattaran, Cagayan.

The first bomb recovered in Tuguegarao City was a 52-inch bomb weighing about 1,000 pounds or 500 kilos.
