Who could say no to major discounts, especially on fashion, food and beauty products? Certainly not the average online shopper who stayed up, ready to fill their shopping carts when the clock struck midnight during the much anticipated 11.11 mega sale.
As these Filipino consumers hurriedly clicked on the Add to Cart and Checkout buttons during the first two hours of the sale, Asia-Pacific’s leading rewards and pre-shopping platform ShopBack was working hard to put cash back into the accounts of its users.
In fact, ShopBack returned around PHP3.5 million in cashback to app users during the 11.11 mega sale, with the top cash earner receiving PHP41,201 on the same day.
Across the region, ShopBack awarded its users a jaw-dropping US$1.5 million in a single day.
"The results of this year's 11.11 sale just proves that in times of uncertainty, consumers rely even more on mega sale events to access deals and discounts for essential items, fashion goods, groceries, and food delivery,” said Prashant Kala, Country General Manager, ShopBack Philippines. “We understand that the effects of the pandemic are lasting and would ultimately shape how we live our lives in the years ahead,” he added.
First launched in Singapore in 2014, the ShopBack app offers its users a one-stop rewards and pre-shopping platform so they can shop the “smarter way” while partner merchants provide performance-based marketing. The pre-shopping platform has reached Australia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Taiwan, Thailand, South Korea and Vietnam, and has awarded shoppers a total of $130 million in cashback over the past five years.
ShopBack users typically get rebates of 4 to 5% but the number could go as high as 70% depending on the partner merchant. ShopBack has 4,000 partner stores internationally, with over 500 of those merchants in the Philippines.
Kala said ShopBack saw a sharp increase in the number of Filipino shoppers going online during the latest mega sale, with data pointing to an uplift of 9 times in total traffic on 11.11 compared to an average day.
Data showed that consumers flocked to Shopee, Lazada, and ZALORA, to hunt online mainly for health and beauty, food, and fashion products while FoodPanda, ZALORA, NordVPN, Nike, and Agoda are the top five brands shoppers looked out for.
Indeed, ShopBack is looking ahead to the coming Christmas season and hopes it could help ease shoppers’ decision-making in picking out gifts for loved ones or treats for themselves during the last installment this year of pre-shopping platform’s biggest online shopping event—ShopFest. The online shopping event actually started in September, with the 9.9 sale, followed by 10.10, 11.11 and the upcoming 12.12 end of season sale.
Kala said that this year’s iteration of ShopFest saw the introduction of flash sales and vouchers that helped shoppers save more money; its new product comparison tool and ShopBack Challenges aid in product discovery and saves time; and social campaigns and livestreams. ShopBack also rolled out a refreshed Cashback Troopers game where users are given the opportunity to win rewards or prizes.
“As a whole, the e-commerce industry has been steadily growing in the Philippines as people of all ages and demographics had to turn to online shopping to purchase their groceries, essentials, and more, due to COVID-19,” Kala explained. “The trend of our users purchasing health products; such as vitamins and supplements, food, and sports goods, online is reflected in the top categories and top brands as Filipinos continue to spend time at home and observe social distancing,” he added.
“With that, consumers are not only increasingly shopping online, but are also looking for ways to save more as they continue to tighten their belts—this makes ShopBack's position as a first point of online shopping a clear value-add to consumers who are seeking out the best deals online," he said.
Conservatism among consumers is growing, ShopBack data showed, not just in the Philippines but across Southeast Asia due to the uncertainty spurred by COVID-19 pandemic. In response, ShopBack continuously finds ways to ensure shoppers get better value for their hard earned money and save at the same time.
