Carabao's day out causes motorcycle mishap; animal and rider killed


CAGAYAN ---- A carabao on its day out crossed the path of a motorcycle rider along Brgy. Centro West, Sta. Teresita, Cagayan which led to the death of both the animal and the rider.

Police Staff Sergeant Ritche Madrid identified the victim as Jerome Ballesteros, 19, a resident of barangay Masi, Sta Teresita. Ballesteros was rushed to the hospital but was declared dead on arrival  due to severe head injuries. He was reportedly not wearing a helmet

Madrid told the Manila Bulletin that the victim was proceeding to Gonzaga Cagayan when the incident happened.

“Biglang nakawala daw ang kalabaw at tumawid, kaya nangyari ang aksidente na kung saan maaring napakabilis din ng biktima," investigators said. (The carabao ran loose and crossed the street and was hit by the motorcycle. It could also be that the motorcycle rider was speeding.)

Madrid said the carabao's caretaker, identified as Jefson Valdez, 31, of  Brgy. Centro West.will be charged for  reckless imprudence resulting in homicide and damage to property.
Authorities reminded motorcycle riders to always wear their helmets to avoid injuries.
