PDP-Laban to benefit from NUP purge

PDP-Laban, President Duterte’s political affiliation, stands to gain immensely from the purging by the National Unity Party of 15 members who declared support for Speaker Lord Allan Velasco at the height of the speakership controversy last month.

Nearly all of the 15 solons whose names were delisted from the NUP roster have reportedly aired their intention to join PDP-Laban whose head in the House of Representatives is none other than Velasco.

Velasco’s being a speaker is also being anticipated to lure more House members to the administration party.

With the Marinduque solon at the helm of the House, there were also expectations that PDP-Laban will regain most of its membership losses that occurred during the 15 months that the chamber was headed by former Speaker and Taguig-Pateros Rep. Alan Peter Cayetano.

A PDP-Laban source said there are no moves within the party to recruit more members, pointing out that this could trigger a controversy that could threaten the supermajority coalition that  recently declared support for Velasco.

“Joining the PDP-Laban is the most logical move for district congressmen who have not political affiliation of whatever reason. But we do not have any conscious move to recruit anybody, especially those who are already members of a political party,” the source said

A total 275 congressmen have reportedly signed a statement of support to the majority coalition headed by Velasco.  

NUP has already lost a top position in the chamber as a result of the depletion of its membership.

Last Wednesday, Laguna Rep. Dan Fernandez was relieved as deputy speaker and replaced by Buhay partylist Rep. Lito Atienza.

Also sacked as deputy speaker were Reps. Fred Castro (Lakas-CMD, Capiz) and Raneo Abu (Np, Batangas).  Designated to take over their posts were Deputy Speaker Rufus Rodriguez (CDP, Cagayan de Oro City) and Las Pinas City Rep. Camille Villar, who declined to replace a fellow-NP member.

The reorganization initiated last Wednesday is expected to continue Wednesday as changes in political affiliations continue.

Meanwhile, the NUP will hold a vital caucus Tuesday to discuss the ongoing House revamp, among others, a party source disclosed.
