Governor eyes CCTV cameras for Iloilo quarrying sites

ILOILO CITY—Governor Arthur Defensor Jr. wants to install CCTV cameras at quarrying sites across the province to curb illegal quarrying activities.

Defensor came up with the idea after receiving reports of alleged illegal extraction of sand along the riverbanks of Dueñas town.

Defensor also noted how trucks overloaded with quarry materials could damage the roads. 

The CCTV cameras will be connected to Iloilo Provincial Civil Defense Operation Center, which is located adjacent to the governor’s office.

“We want CCTVs cameras connected here so we can see, real-time, the operations,” Defensor pointed out.

If the plan materializes, Dueñas town will be the first place where the CCTV cameras will be installed.

Other towns with heavy quarrying activities that may need CCTV cameras include Alimodian, Calinog and Janiuay.

Illegal quarrying and over extraction have been a recurring issue in Iloilo province. It even prompted the provincial government to issue a temporary ban on issuing permits to contractors wanting to extract sand and gravel from the province’s major river systems in 2017.

At that time, a team from the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA-6) said multi-million government bridges could be in danger of being damaged because of excessive quarrying along river banks.
