PH posts 1,791 new COVID cases

The Department of Health recorded 1,791 new COVID-19 cases Saturday, pushing the country’s cumulative caseload to 416,852.

The DoH said 33,224 are active cases, of which 84.5 percent are experiencing mild symptoms, 8.7 percent have no symptoms, 4.3 percent are in critical condition, 2.3 percent are severe, while 0.20 percent in moderate condition.

Tarlac has the highest number of new cases with 211, followed by Davao City with 115, Laguna with 74, Cavite with 69, and Negros Occidental with 65.

The DoH said 328 more people recovered from COVID-19, pushing the recovery tally to 375,548. However, the death toll increased to 8,080 after 55 died.

Meanwhile, DoH Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said that the clinical trial of antiviral drug Remdesivir will still continue despite the World Health Organization’s recommendation against the use of Remdesivir in treating those with COVID-19.

Remdesivir is among the investigational drugs being studied in the WHO-led Solidarity Trial which the Philippines is participating in.

Vergeire said that one of the recommendations of the WHO is that the participating countries can still continue the trial to gather more evidence about the effects of the drug to COVID-19 patients.

“Until WHO tells us to completely stop this trial because of their recommendation, then that’s the time we will stop. But for now, they did not state that we should stop it already,” said Vergeire.

“We will follow whatever WHO recommends to us because we are part of the trial,” she added.

In a statement, the WHO said “there is currently no evidence that Remdesivir improves survival and other outcomes” in COVID-19 patients.

“The evidence suggested no important effect on mortality, need for mechanical ventilation, time to clinical improvement, and other patient-important outcomes,” it added.

WHO said that it “recognized that more research is needed, especially to provide higher certainty of evidence for specific groups of patients.”
